Hot Summer (K)nights at Hersheypark
Yes, I am in still in the middle of a trip report from last year, and in the middle of a trip report from earlier this year, so it seems like the perfect time to start another one! In the middle!
Actually, it is kind of timely, so I wanted to mention it while it’s still a bit relevant.
This year’s girls’ trip was a spin around Pennsylvania. The niece said she’d like to see Philadelphia, so we spent a day there and filled in the rest with several other sites (and squeezed the trip in the week before the DNC).
Close to the end of the trip we spent a few days at Hersheypark in Hershey, PA.
A Little Bit of Jazzy Jem Goes a Long Way
So not true, Bret. There’s never enough of Jazzy Jem!
I was able to see my two favorite Kiwi folkies on June 14, 2016, at the Palace Theatre in Columbus. It almost erased the memory of the Oddball Festival a few years ago….
I’m All for Oddballs, but I Also Like My Phone
I attended the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival in Detroit/Clarkston on September 1. While I was excited about the lineup (Kristen Schaal, Al Madigral, Hannibal Buress, Demetri Martin, Flight of the Conchords, and Dave Chappelle), this type of venue didn’t really seem conducive to a satisfying comedy experience. I had a good time, but it should have been a great time.

Germans vs. Irish
This trying to get out of a rut/laziness spiral has produced some good times lately!
A few weeks ago I randomly ordered the movie Once from Amazon. I’m not sure what made me choose it. I finally got around to watching it last week. I enjoyed it, but I loved, loved, loved the music. The next day, I received an email from the Taft Theatre (guess I’m on their mailing list after seeing Jim Gaffigan there a few months ago…hilarious), and wouldn’t you know it, Glen Hansard, the male lead in Once, was going to be playing the Taft on the very next Saturday. Tickets were still available, so I bought, and without even thinking about it.

St. Louis: Gateway to the West and the Conchords
Believe it or not, I took another road trip to see Flight of the Conchords Live!, this time in St. Louis on April 30. I’m beginning to think the Conchords have become the theme for this year. Or at least for this blog. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
I left my house way early because I was pretty excited to be meeting up with a friend who was driving in from Oklahoma. As I crossed Indiana and Illinois, I was bored and radio channel surfed. All I heard about was swine flu. I’m sure it was panic-inducing, er, important info, but I was mostly hoping that the “pandemic” was not going to start affecting public events…like concerts. It was a boring drive, but I made good time (it helps to leave at 4:00 am) and decided to head to the Fabulous Fox Theatre to take a tour.

Conchords and I Hit Nashville
It’s been a while, but have no fear, I have a road trip report from Nashville and an amazing Flight of the Conchords concert at the Ryman Auditorium!
On Friday (April 10), I headed south to meet up with some friends in Nashville for a day of laughter, tornadoes, good food, great company, and a superb concert.
I made really good time and hit very few snags save for a weird, sideways downpour near Dinosaur World in Cave City, KY. Just as I got to Nashville, around 1:00, there were tornado warnings and severe weather all around. Didn’t stop us from heading up to Broadway for some food and fun, albeit soaked-to-the-bone fun. It was really coming down.
